America Is Under Attack
by Don Brown

Amazon Description:
The events of September 11, 2001 changed the world forever. Don Brown narrates the events of the day in a way that is both accessible and understandable for young readers. Straightforward and honest, this account moves chronologically through the morning from the plane hijackings to the crashes at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Pennsylvania; from the rescue operations at the WTC site to the collapse of the buildings.

My Thoughts:
This award-winning non-fiction book is the best children's book I've seen chronicling the events of 9/11. Its water color paintings perfectly illustrate the powerful and poignant text. If you are a parent, or teacher of young readers, this book is a must. I would highly recommend America Is Under Attack to readers from the ages of eight to fourteen.

  1. Something like that would be nice to have to help teach children about those events. Though it was such a traumatic thing and it's hard to revisit the events without being affected by them.

    1. You're right, Sara. It would be a great aid for a parent to have if and when their child asked questions about the tragedy - which they invariably would at some point.

  2. It's good that Don Brown has written an age-appropriate book that informs young readers about 9/11. Where other books are either too light on the information or too graphic, it seems that Brown has struck a balance. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Thank you for sharing this book, Victoria. It's important that this subject matter be handled well, especially for young readers. So much happened on 9/11. Striking the right balance between information and emotion is crucial, I think, in describing that horrible day.

    1. Thanks Cynthia. Although my brother-in-law is on the FDNY I still learned more details about 9/11 from this little book. Hope you have a great week.
