Storyteller's Journey

MY BOOK COVER REVEAL!

After twelve years of outlining, writing, revising, and editing, my upper middle grade fantasy novel is finally about to become a reality! The Sibylline Scroll is the first novel in my new book series: The Time Travel Tales of Livvi Biddle. I absolutely love the cover! Many thanks to Michael Lindstrom and Kriston Clark for bringing it to life.

I had hoped to use this image of Livvi Biddle on the front cover, but as we went through the arduous process of creating the cover, it was clear that that just wouldn't work. But something else did...

When we began designing the back cover, we realized that there was a perfect spot for the image of Livvi Biddle!

The process of creating this novel has been the most rigorous, and the most rewarding, of any of the books I've written. To learn more about The Sibylline Scroll, and to subscribe to my newsletter, check out my website, here.

Stay tuned! The book will be available this autumn 2023!

Storyteller's Journey

COVER REVEAL!

The day has finally arrived to reveal the cover and synopsis for my next children's book: THE NIGHT OF THE NORTH - painted in oils by my artist-husband, Michael Lindstrom!

Here is a synopsis of the illustrated short story, in flap-copy style:

In 1927, Nolan Soderstrom and his father depart Minnesota to learn the life of naturalists in the Territory of Alaska. But when they visit Mt. McKinley National Park over their winter holiday, Nolan finds himself lost & alone at the base of Denali, deep in the uncharted wilderness.

Dangerous animals, a mighty winter wind, and even a mesmerizing display from the Northern Lights, are a few of the events twelve-year-old Nolan experiences on his daring adventure in the wilds of Alaska. It will take courage and conviction to find his way back to civilization.

Here's the fun book trailer for THE NIGHT OF THE NORTH:

COVER REVEAL!

It's always exciting to reveal a cover for a new book, but especially when it's your own! My husband, Michael Lindstrom, delivered big time with the cover art for our upcoming book, Journey to Snowdonia.

This is the second book in our series of Lindstrom Wintertime Tales.

Here is the flap copy description for Journey to Snowdonia:
Henry and Harriet are proper children, who live in a proper house, on a proper street, in Victorian London. But when their father, Mr. Charles W. Smithwaite, decides to take the family on a winter holiday in Wales, the siblings go on an outing that is anything but proper. Whilst their father & mother are busy with their society friends, Henry & Harriet venture away from the country manor, into the ancient Gwydir Forest, deep in the land of Snowdonia. Then, when a mishap occurs in the mysterious woods, they discover the magical powers of the amazing creatures that live amidst the misty mountains of Wales. But most importantly, they learn about trust, and about kindness, and about the necessity for courage when confronted with an adversary. A magical tale of whimsy & wonder, sure to delight readers this holiday season!

We'll be promoting our children's book later in the year, so stay tuned!

Storyteller's Journey

                                COVER REVEAL!

It's been nearly seven years since the seed for the yuletide story of The Scandinavian Santa plopped into my mind on a dark December day. I'd been brooding in my studio about how sometimes life can be so difficult when, for some unknown reason, I thought of my great-grandfather: Peter Swanson. (My Norwegian ancestor on my mom's side of the family turned out to be the inspiration for my protagonist.) To say I'm grateful for the way life has turned around for me, would be an understatement for sure. It's not only this book that's made a difference in my life, it's the strength I had to muster to deal with a myriad of struggles all along the way on my storyteller's journey. I am thrilled with my debut book; this experience has been extraordinary. Here is the flap copy description of our picture book/storybook, that my husband - Michael Lindstrom - so masterfully illustrated:

Journey to the enchanted land of Scandinavia, where, nestled in the Nordic Forest, lives Santa Swanson. Each winter, this nephew of St. Nicholas has his own Christmas Eve delivery to make - but what that is, and to whom, has long been hidden. With the help of two mischievous flying polar bears, Gunnar and Ludvig; a rescued golden eagle, Lars; and a host of other whimsical creatures; Santa Swanson prepares for his annual sleigh ride down Viking Valley!
Delight in this yuletide adventure, complete with a fanciful ice skating party, a rustic holiday feast, and an unexpected reunion with Santa Swanson's famous uncle. In the midst of all this wonder, the forest friends learn a heartwarming secret from a Christmas angel revealing the magic of generosity.

The Scandinavian Santa will be available in September 2014 in hardcover and ebook (Amazon, B&N, Apple) from Deeds Publishing.

Sensational Scribe

           COVER REVEAL!

Today marks the first time I have revealed a book cover on Writ of Whimsy; it couldn't have come at a more appropriate time, since Awakened is the debut YA novel for my writing partner and good friend - Kriston Johnson!

Here is a summary of the fast-paced and fascinating story that was a pleasure for me to see come to life over the past few years:

Can fighting for the right side be the wrong thing to do?

Draven, the tyrant ruler of Elyndia for the last one thousand years, searches for the one who can fulfill his prophecy.

The Paladins, an elite band of warriors sworn to protect their way of life at all costs, search for the one with the ability to bring their world crumbling down.

An innocent girl, tormented by demons only she can see, lives on the brink of insanity and longs for a life of peace.

When seventeen-year-old Jade Rosenberg reads from an antique book, she has no idea that she has read an incantation awaking her inherited power; she learns she has descended from an enchanted realm and is a member of a powerful race thought to have been hunted to extinction.

Ripped from her world, Jade is forced to seek refuge from those who want her dead. She is given one of two options and the time has come for her to make a choice:
assassinate their sworn enemy...

Or sacrifice her soul.

And now, it is my pleasure to welcome Kriston Johnson to
Writ of Whimsy! Thanks for agreeing to be interviewed, Kriston.

"Thank you for having me on Writ of Whimsy, Victoria."

Kriston, where did the idea for "Awakened - The Legends of Elyndia" originate?

"A few years back my husband was given a family heirloom passed down to him from his father. It was an antique knife with a curved blade and tattered copper sheath. When the knife was handed to my husband he held it with great respect, as it was obvious that it was very old. Not long after he held it, my husband carefully pulled the sheath from the blade and held the knife out in front of him for everyone to in the room to see. As he was holding the knife I pictured a wave of powerful magic wash across the room as if the beholder just awakened an ability they never knew they had. Thus, my story was born."

I've heard that story before, but I still find it so amazing. Could you tell me a little bit about your journey in creating your debut novel?

"I literally started at ground zero. It had been twenty years since I had been in school and I had not written anything longer than a grocery list since. The first thing I did was enroll in a few classes at the community college. When I started taking my writing more seriously I started blogging, attended a conference, joined the Willamette Writers and SCBWI. I wanted to be fully immersed in the writing community."

Do you have any tips about self-publishing that you'd like to share?

"Yes, hiring a professional editor is a must. Awakened had two rounds with an editor and one with a proofreader. Beta readers are extremely helpful, but an editor will always catch more, and force you to dig deeper. Self-published authors should also hire a professional cover designer. I know we are told not to judge a book by its cover, but let's face it, a lot of people do. If a cover looks like it was thrown together at the last minute, a reader may think the book was too."

What does your life outside of your literary pursuits look like?

Gets husband
Me - "Honey, what does she mean by this question?"
Husband - "She wants to know what you like to do when you're not writing."
Me - "Are you telling me...there is a life beyond my book?" tilts head and blinks
Husband - cautiously walks backward out of the room
Me - total Kermit flail

Now there's the Kriston I know, folks! Last question, Kriston:
What advice would you share with aspiring authors?

"Be in the moment. Balancing my precious free time is always a delicate task. Working full time and spending quality time with the family leaves a very limited time to squeeze in a decent writing session. I spent the first three years of my writing life in constant turmoil. When I was with my family I was irritated that I was not writing, when I was writing I was ridden with guilt that I was not with my family, so time with either was full of distractions and never as rich and fulfilling as it could have been.

Take the time - make a schedule so neither is neglected. That way you are sure to get the most out of each moment."

Thanks again, Kriston. Good luck with "Awakened!"
