Writer in the Woods

With the unofficial end of summer rapidly approaching, visitors are desperately trying to fit in one last warm weekend visit to Lake Quinault - I know we are. Memories of Yogi and Boo-Boo discussing "pic -a - nic baskets" come to mind! Maybe a pie made from this week's featured plant...

The huckleberry bush has a pink-colored flower in the spring that develops into either a red or blue colored berry. Unless you're a botanist you have to wait for them to bloom to know for sure which is which. Whether red or blue these little berries make delicious pies and jams.
